Answering the Call

Three EMS Unlimited resources are deployed to the Morrill wildfire as early-season fire conditions grip the Great Plains.

Wildfire season arrived early this year in Nebraska — and EMS Unlimited was ready. Three of our medical transport resources are currently deployed to support wildfire operations across the state, working alongside fire crews and emergency management to protect lives in some of the toughest conditions our people operate in.

We don’t share this to draw attention to ourselves. We share it because the communities we serve — in Nebraska, Kansas, and across the region — deserve to know that when the situation is at its most difficult, the people they trust for their everyday medical transport needs are there.

On the Ground at Morrill

The photograph above tells part of the story: an EMS Unlimited unit staged at the water’s edge, a helicopter working the smoke column across the reservoir, the amber haze of an active fire visible on the ridge. Our crew is there — staged, equipped, integrated with incident command, and ready to respond at a moment’s notice.

Wildfire is hard on EMS crews. You’re operating in smoke, with access routes that change by the hour and no fixed infrastructure to fall back on. Smoke inhalation, burns, exertion — the patient load is real and it moves fast. Our ALS and Critical Care Transport capabilities mean we can actually manage those patients in the field, not just put them in the back and drive.

This is our wildland team — trained specifically for fire operations, not just standing by at the perimeter. They deploy into active environments, work within incident command structure, and are equipped for whatever comes. When the fire lines move, we move with them.

Who We Are in This Region

EMS Unlimited is a paramedic-owned ambulance and medical transport company. We built this organization from the ground up around one commitment: to be a dependable, clinically excellent partner to the communities and health systems we serve — no matter what they’re dealing with.

In Nebraska, Kansas, and beyond, our day-to-day work is interfacility transport — safely moving patients between hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and specialty care centers. We do that work with the same seriousness and skill we bring to an emergency response, because every patient deserves that standard.

I’ve been doing this long enough to know that the real measure of an EMS organization isn’t what happens on a normal Tuesday — it’s what happens when things go sideways fast. Watching our crews mobilize for this deployment, no hesitation, no complaints, just getting to work — that’s everything. I’m proud of every single one of them. And I’m grateful we’ve built something that communities actually count on when it matters most.

When you call EMS Unlimited for a routine interfacility transfer on a Tuesday morning, you’re calling the same organization that has crews staged at a wildfire on a Thursday afternoon. That’s not an accident — it’s just who we are.

A Note on This Season

Fire season is starting earlier every year out here. Longer dry spells, wind that doesn’t quit — the conditions have changed, and the calendar doesn’t mean what it used to. For us, that means staying ready year-round — the equipment, the training, the relationships with emergency management partners across every state we operate in.

We take that preparation seriously. We invest in our people, our equipment, and our relationships with emergency management partners across every state we operate in — so that when a fire ignites in March instead of July, we’re not scrambling. We’re already there.

Thank You to Our Crews

The units currently deployed to Nebraska are staffed by EMS professionals who showed up without hesitation — ready to work in difficult conditions, far from home, doing what they do every day. They deserve recognition — not because this is above and beyond for them, but because it’s just Tuesday.

To every paramedic, EMT, and dispatcher who makes EMS Unlimited what it is: the region sees your commitment. So do we.
